Right after the holidays, we went to Park City, UT as a family to safely celebrate the New Year and introduce Roux to skiing for the first time! Many of you may have seen that our trip ended with a brief trip to the ER because Loren dislocated his shoulder…BUT before then we had THE BEST time!
I wanted to share details of our trip because we had such a good time. Something to keep in mind is that we did have to wear masks everywhere the entire time. This did include Roux as well because he’s over two.
You can read more about how he does with masks and a few fun Disney-themed kids masks we like here.
Where we stayed and what we ate
We stayed out at the Sundial Lodge. We had access to a kitchen so we could cook our own meals and avoid every meal. We had food delivered by The Grocery Girls — we loved them!
Family Skiing
We did Half Day private ski lessons for Roux and I stayed with him the whole time. This was our only option because he was so young – but it ended up being perfect for us. Our instructor was Grace and she was AMAZING. We spent so much time learning the fundamentals of skiing, but equal parts playing and keeping Roux excited about it all. The bunny slopes were perfect. He did three days of the-hour lessons. Check out this Instagram post to see how proud I was of our Roux!
Here’s a breakdown os what we did each day 🙂
Friday
Friday was our travel day. Click here to check out my carry-on tips for traveling with a toddler! When we got in we dropped out things and went straight to our ski fitting. After a quick burger and milkshake from Draft’s Burger Bar, we headed back to our room to organize our clothes and groceries while we watched movies and got settled.
Saturday
We took the gondola to the bottom of the mountain and then the public bus system to the downtown area. It was super very simple and clean! We loved exploring downtown Park City shops and restaurants and watching families and kids playing in the snow and just enjoying the cold weather — something we’re not used to seeing since Flordia doesn’t have much cold weather ;). We also stopped and ate soup and salad at 501 on Main.
Sunday
Sunday was our main ski day. Roux and I went to lessons in the morning while Loren went for a few runs down green and blue mountains. It ended up working out perfectly. I loved being with Roux and watching him try so hard and never give up. It was such a special lesson for me to learn as an adult! That night we ate at Ramen Night at Kuchu Shabu.
Monday
I had a solo skiing morning on the mountains before Roux’s morning ski lesson. Loren hung with Roux and had breakfast and got him ready for the day! I met Roux on the Bunny Slope and Loren went on some solo runs. We had salad take out from Red Tail Grill for dinner. Every night we had a very easy bedtime with Roux because he was so tired from being out on the slopes all day!
Tuesday
On Tuesday we woke up and went Tubing! We had a two-hour tubing session which was a BLAST. Woodward Park City had such a fun facility with so much to do inside and outside — they even had a great snack bar to grab some treats in between activities.
After tubing, we went snowmobiling at Park City Peaks aka Thousand Peaks Snowmobiling. We had a two-hour tour and it was the most beautiful experience of our lives! We opted for a triple snowmobile so I could hold on to Roux the entire time in between us.
We used Bear Transportation to get from tubing to snowmobiling — our driver Dave was amazing.
We had a ramen night at Kuchu Shabu — we loved it that much we couldn’t wait to go back!
Wednesday
Loren’s accident…He was trying to avoid another skier on the mountain so he jumped out of the way and landed on his shoulder. After a day at the ER, we found out he dislocated his shoulder 🙁 We order pizza from Murdock’s Cafe, returned equipment, and packed everything up to head back a day early.
99.9% of this family vacation was perfect. The 0.1% was when Loren dislocated his shoulder snowboarding and now he’s in a sling. Roux had THE BEST time learning how to ski and being in the snow. We will definitely remember this trip for a long time 🙂
